Possessive Nouns (04.5)

Possessive Nouns (part-1)

  • Good morning boys!
Today we'll start a new topic- Possessive Nouns

At the end of the lesson you will be able to:-

  • identify possessive nouns
  • write possessive nouns using apostrophes in the appropriate places
  • create sentences using possessive nouns

You probably know a lot about nouns already. This lesson looks at possessive nouns and how we use them.

To begin with, first let us understand what is a possessive noun.
  • The house that belongs to Rohan is beautiful.
  • The bag of my brother is on the table.

These sentences sound awkward, don't they? We don't usually talk or write like this. So, how can we improve these sentences? How about:
  • Rohan's house is beautiful.

  • My brother's bag is on the table.

Now these sentences sound like what we would use when we're speaking. What we just did was create possessive nounsnouns that show ownership.

Possessive nouns are nouns that show ownership or possession. This noun shows ownership of an object or another noun and tells who or what it belongs to

Note: We use ( ' ) or - 's with living beings. Apostrophe is not used with non-living objects. For example:

We do not say : the picture's frame
We say : the frame of the picture

POSSESSIVE NOUN is formed by adding an apostrophe (') and often (but not always) the letter 's'.
You always add “apostrophe + s”. . .
(') this is apostrophe
Examples:
The book belongs to John.    →      John’s book.
The tail belonging to the fox →     the fox’s tail
The nest of the birds      →             the birds' nest
The backpack belonging to Gus → Gus’s backpack
How to Use Apostrophe (')
1. Singular nouns                                          Add -'s
the passenger                                          the passenger's
the house of Mr Das                            Mr Das's house
the ticket of the passenger.               the passenger's ticket

2. Plural nouns ending in -s             Add -' (only ', not 's)

    the soldiers                                      the soldiers'
    the birds                                           the birds'
the guns of the soldiers                    the soldiers' guns

3. Plural nouns not ending in -s           Add -'s

   children                                             children's
   the women                                        the women's
the books for children                       children's books

Look at the pictures below:-

Hope you all have got an idea of what possessive nouns are and how to use apostrophe('). Let's watch a video for better understanding:-

Let's do some classwork (in the English grammar notebook)

    Task-1:  Class Work

Possessive nouns are nouns that show ownership or possession. This noun shows ownership of an object or another noun and tells who or what it belongs to

2) Mr. Das's car                          ⟶   Mr. Das' car
3) The uniforms of the soldiers  ⟶   the soldier's uniform
4) The books for children           ⟶   the children's books

Its' time for some Homework!!
