REVISION OF NOUNS

Good Morning boys !!

Today, we'll take a quick look at 'Kinds of nouns'.

By the end of the lesson, you will be able to

identify nouns in a sentence
state the kind of noun in a sentence
construct sentences using nouns

So let's get started!

** Common nouns are nouns that refer to people, places or things in general.

** Proper nouns  on the other hand, refer to  specific people, places and things.
Let's observe the following examples:-

Example 1 . :-     St. Mary's High School has two new teachers.

Here,    'St. Mary's High School' is a proper noun   ( its a specific name given to a school )    and ' teachers ' is a common noun.

Example 2 :-   Mountains have steep sides and peaks. Mt. Everest is the tallest in the world.

Here, ' Mt. Everest ' is a proper noun , while 'mountain is a common noun as it refers to mountains ( high lands) in general .

** A Collective noun is the name given to a collection of people, animals, things or ideas taken together and spoken of as one whole.

Here are some examples of common collective nouns used for people:

A band of musicians
A troupe of dancers
A pack of wolves

** An abstract noun is the name of some state, quality, feeling or idea that we can only think of or feel but cannot touch or see.

eg. I admired his honesty.

Gandhiji believed in truth and non- violence.

Honesty, truth, non-violence are qualities which cannot be seen or touched.

I hope now you have a clear idea about all kinds of nouns. So now let's revise. Take out your Eng lang notebook and write down this exercise.
