NOUNS PART 6
April 30,2020
Good morning students!
Today, we are going to learn about COUNTABLE AND UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS.
At the end of the unit, you will be able to:
- identify countable and uncountable nouns
- use the correct articles, determiners, and quantifiers with countable/uncountable nouns.
Let's start our class by singing along this fun song on countable and uncountable nouns:
Click on the video below👇
Read these sentences👇
1. I like to drink milk.
2. Ajay eats an apple every day.
3. Viju has a pet dog and a pet cat also.
The highlighted words in the above sentences are common nouns. They can be both countable and uncountable.
Nouns that can be counted are called countable nouns. They can have singular and plural forms.
Nouns that cannot be counted are called uncountable nouns.
Look at some of the examples of countable and uncountable nouns below:
Countable nouns are easy to recognize. They are things that we can count.
For example "pen".
We can count pens. We can have one, two, three or more pens.
Here are some more countable nouns:
- dog, cat, animal, man, person
Uncountable nouns are substances, concepts, etc that we cannot "count".
For example, we cannot count "milk".
We can count "bottles of milk" or "litres of milk", but we cannot count "milk" itself.
Here are some more uncountable nouns:
- music, art, love, happiness
- advice, information, news
- furniture, luggage
- rice, sugar, butter, water
- electricity, gas, power
- money, currency
We usually treat uncountable nouns as singular. We use a singular verb. For example:
- This news is very important.
- Your luggage looks heavy.
Let's watch this video to understand more about it:
I hope you enjoyed watching the video and now have a better understanding of countable and uncountable nouns.
Let's do a small activity today!
