LESSON 2 - RIKKI-tikki and NAG

May 9, 2020

A very good afternoon to you all!

Actually, its good afternoon now! But since we are meeting just now, so, we can consider this as a fresh morning!!

Today, we are going to start with the second chapter from the READRE,  Rikki - tikki and Nag.

This story is written by Rudyard Kipling, who wrote The Jungle Book, which was one of his best work. He was a poet, novelist and a story writer. His stories for children reflect his love for Indian culture.

After the completion of the story, you will be able to:

*understand an interesting story
*appreciate and value family bonding
*enrich your vocabulary

This is a very interesting story which shows a special bond between humans and the pets

Now, let's read the story. It is about a baby mongoose, a pet of a British family.

Let us talk about the author, Rudyard Kipling. He was the writer of the famous children's book,
'The Jungle Book'. He believed in human bonding, i.e. to love and care for each other.
In this book , he has shown the relationship between a human child and the wild animals,
who took care of this boy like their own cub.

Similarly, in this story, the British family saved a baby mongoose who was washed away in a flood.
He was taken care by Teddy, their son. In return, the mongoose promised to save the family from
the dangers of the snakes living in the gaden.

The story begins, when one day, Rikki-tikki went for a night walk.Suddenly,he ran into a Chuchundra, the muskrat, who was very slowly and quietly moving round the wall. He was feeling very sad and cried. At that moment, Rikki-tikki came in front of him.

Chuchundra became scared and requested Rikki-tikki not to kill him. On hearing this,
Rikki replied in a very inpolite manner that a snake-killer never kills muskrats.
Means, he wanted to say that he is brave enough to kill snakes then, why would he kill him!

Then Chuchundra got little relaxed but warned him that one who kills snakes is killed by snakes.
He was worried that the snake might kill him thinking him to be a mongoose.
Rikki, after listening to this, told the mongoose that it is not possible because the Nag is in the garden and he would remain inside the house because of being scared of snakes.

NOW, HERE, LET ME INTRODUCE THE CHARACTERS OF THE STORY :

Now- What happens when Chuchundra tells Rikki that he can hear a faint sound of scratch
coming from  the window pane?

What kind of a sound was it? Who took out that sound?

This, you will come to know in the next class.
