RIKKI -TIKKI AND NAG PART-2

LESSON 2 - RIKKI-TIKKI and NAG

A very good morning to you all!

Hope you enjoyed reading the introduction of 'Rikki Tiki and Nag'. Today we'll continue the story and go through the most interesting part of it.

After the completion of the story, you will be able to:

*read and comprehend the story
*summarise the story in your own words
*acquire new vocabulary

Now, let's continue reading the story.

ExplanationRikki Tikki told Chuchundra that there was danger as Nag was in the garden and he knew that the muskrat never goes there. All of a sudden, Rikki Tikki heard a very faint scratching sound in the garden, a noise as faint as a wasp walking on a windowpane. It was the sound of the dry scratch of a snake's scales on brick-work. He thought that it must be Nag or Nagaina crawling into the bathroom sluice(channel for surplus water to drain out).
Hearing the sound, Rikiki Tikki rushed into Teddy's bathroom but he didn't find anybody there. Then he went to Teddy's mother's bathroom where he found Nag and Nagaina whispering to each other.

Difficult wordsfaint: unclear , wasp: a narrow waist insect like bees, sluice: channel for surplus water to drain out

We continue with the next paragraph now:

ExplanationOn overhearing Nag and Nagaina's conversation, Rikki Tikki came to know that Nag and Nagaina were plotting to kill the family to occupy the bungalow. Nagaina instructed Nag to go in quietly and remember to bite the big man first. When he was done, he should come out and tell her. Nag tried to avoid killing Rikki Tikki. Nagaina explained him again that when there will be no people in the bungalow, the mongoose will also go away and they would be the king and queen of the garden. She wanted this because her eggs in the melon bed were ready to hatch and her children would need room and quiet.
Nag tried explaining Nagaina that there was no need to hunt for Rikki Tikki afterwards. He would kill the big man and his wife alongwith the child and come away quickly. Then the bungalow would be empty and Rikki Tikki will have to go.

Difficult words: whispering: speak very softly using one's breath rather than one's throat.

So boys, till now we have read that Rikki-tikki overhears that Nag and Nagaina are plotting to kill the family to occupy the bungalow so that the mongoose goes away and they can have the garden for themselves.

Come to the next page (pg 20) and let's read further:

ExplanationOn overhearing the conversation of Nag and Nagaina, Rikki Tikki was taken aback and became furious (angry). When he saw Nag, the big cobra coming out of the sluice, he got frightened. At first, Rikki Tikki thought that if he fights with him, then he would be the winner. He kept watching Nag. He saw Nag drinking from the water jar and waited till he fell asleep. He kept thinking of the various ways to attack Nag.Finally, he planned to attack on his head above the hood.

Difficult words: tingled: to experience a slight pricking sensation, rage: violent uncontrollable anger, odds: chances of something happening

What happens next??? We'll check this out in our next class.......
