VERBS PART 3

Good morning boys!

At the end of the lesson, you will be able to:
  • differentiate between subject and object in a sentence
  • define and explain direct object

Today we will be learning about 'OBJECT OF A VERB'

So, what is an object of a verb and how do we find it?

A sentence may contain an object.

An object of a sentence is the person or thing acted on by the subject.
It is called a direct object.

For example:
  • She bought a bag of cherries.
The verb here is bought. The subject here is she

To find the direct object in this sentence, ask this question:
Who or what did she buy?

The direct object = a bag of cherries.

To frame the question to find the object, you must use the subject and the verb .

Who or what did (subject)  (verb) ?

Let's look at some more examples:

1. Sneha loves ice cream.

What does Sneha love? ----- ice cream

We say ice cream is the object of the verb loves.

2.  The Principal praised Rohan.

Whom did the Principal praise? ---- Rohan

Rohan is the object of the verb praised.

3. Mohan wastes money.

What does Mohan waste? ---- money

Money is the object of the verb wastes.

***In the above examples, the object answers the question formed with
what or whom and the verb.
The questions are --  likes what? , wastes what? praised whom?

NOTE: Not every sentence has an object. The sentence only has an object
if there is an answer to the question: What did (subject) (verb) ?

Example : The wild dogs barked loudly

The verb = barked.
The subject = the wild dogs.
What did the wild dogs bark?
There is no answer, so there is no object.
